Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Biezunski.

Claudia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in San Fernando, California. My father had a denim factory, and that is where I was first introduced to sewing. Once I started, I couldn’t stop – I was addicted to creating one of a kind handbags and other accessories for my friends and family. Some kids would tease and call me “grandma” – but the name calling only motivated me to work harder and improve my skills.

At 25, I decided to leave my job as a receptionist and move down to San Diego in order to pursue my dream of operating a sewing studio. It was scary and my family thought I was a little crazy, but in the end, it was the best decision of my life. I called the sewing studio “Sew Loka” and I have been operating since 2013.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. There have been countless moments along the way where I have doubted myself and my abilities. My lowest point came about three years in when I got so behind on my electricity bills, that SDG&E had to shut off my power and I was not able to use my sewing machine and finish a project in time. It was heartbreaking for both me and my client – but after that tragic day, I told myself “Never Again!”

As a creative person, I didn’t like to think too much about bills, price points, or margins – but I quickly realized that in order to keep Sew Loka alive, I would need to sharpen up on my business skills. It’s not just about creating art, but it’s also about charging the correct price and understanding your worth.
